Who was Charles Darwin? Charles Darwin developed the theory of natural selection and evolution. He did this because he was on a voyage, traveling around the world on the Beagle. When he traveled around the world, he observed many different animals and came up with different theories about them and how they change over time. His ideas weren't believe when people first heard about it. While Charles was still trying to prove his theories to people, other people came up with theories and ideas too.
One of them was Charles Lyells. He proved to people that Earth was older than most people thought it was. This idea changed Darwin's ideas about evolution and natural selection. If Earth was older than that must mean animals have evolved from other animals and adapted to their environment. This is what made Darwin create the idea of natural selection. Natural selection means that when certain animals survive better than others because they are well adapted to the environment. Another thing that helped was the observation of peppered moths.
